351 PCBs

Replacement Boards for the Ampex 351

Details

The Ampex 351 is one of recording’s stand-out tape machines.  Not only was it a great tape machine, but many people have found them to be great stand alone tube mic preamps.  Some people use them in stock form while others modify them to be strictly a preamp.  Their one drawback is age.....

GAS Audio Recording Equipment has faithfully recreated the PCBs that are the heart of the Ampex 351.  Whether you want to recap your 50+ year old unit or you are looking to do a Preamp only modification, these GAS 351 PCBs will allow you to keep your Ampex 351 in top shape.

The GAS 351 PCBs are sold individually or as a set.  There is the Power Supply PCB, Repro PCB, and the Record PCB.  They come blank with a corresponding bill of materials needed to populate the PCBs.  Also, a link to a Mouser project cart for each board will be available to make purchasing the parts quick and easy.

WARNING  -     THESE ARE TO BE USED BY AN EXPERIENCED TECHNICIAN ONLY!!!  THERE ARE DEADLY VOLTAGES PRESENT IN AMPEX 351 UNITS!  THE USE OF THE GAS 351 PCBs ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!

351 Power Supply PCB

The GAS power supply PCB has a few changes and upgrades from the original.  This board will work with the original circuit or could be a platform to perform a “Mod” to make a 351 primarily a mic preamp.  The obsolete hard-to-find multi section electrolytic capacitors have been replaced with footprints for separate capacitors.  The resistor footprints will accept both carbon composition and metal film capacitors.  The flakey intermittent prone spade terminals have been replaced with a more solid series of screw terminal block footprints.  You must reuse the original K1 relay if you wish to use this as a tape machine

Price: $25

Note:  These are made to work with the “Master” type of 351.  Use with the “Slave” type unit has not been tested.  Determining which unit you have look on the back of the unit.  The master type have their own power cord. However the slave gets its power from a multi pin connector that normally connects to the master.
